What I Ordered
Butter Chicken Pie
The Butter chicken pie was filled with an Indian Style butter chicken. It was very flavorful but not hot. This was a very filling, savory pie.
Chicken, Leek, Mushroom Pie
This was a lighter savory hand pie. It was similar to a pot pie with a very nice light flavor profile, but still well-seasoned. This was a simple but nicely balanced pie.
Beef, Mushroom, Gorgonzola Pie
The Beef, Mushroom, Gorgonzola Pie was a savory pie similar to an empanada in shape. This is a pie for mushroom lovers! It has more mushrooms in the filling than anything else. It is a bit heavier, heartier pie reminiscent of beef with mushroom gravy.
Chocolate Chess Pie
The slice of chocolate chess pie was served with fresh whipped cream. Tis pie was basically a chocolate custard, sort of like having a chocolate Jello. It was alright, but I think this variety of pie is not one of my favorites. Now I know!
Lemon Almond Cream Pie
The slice of lemon almond cream pie was phenomenal! It is a decadent dessert pie with layers of cream, lemon custard, and a tasty crust. Also, it is topped with almonds.
Overall Food
Proper Pie Co. offers a wide variety of sweet and savory pies, made fresh every day. I could tell they were popular by the line of folk waiting for them to open. You can order whole pies, but if you order individually at the counter the savory pies ($7.95) are hand pies and the sweet pies ($6.95) are by the slice. The crust was delicious on all often pies and the serving sizes were large. For Example, the savory pies were very thick so they had a ton of filling in them. Overall, I thought all of the pies were delicious. You really can’t go wrong. But, be aware they have limited hours and pie! So go early to get the full selection. Also, they are only open 12-6pm Wednesday-Sunday.
Service
The service experience at Proper Pie Co. is quite limited. The only interaction is ordering at the window and receiving the food at the window. I found that the staff were very friendly and pleasant, while being extremely speedy. Moreover, it is a rapid process where you order, pay, and receive your pies before you leave the window.
Atmosphere
Size
It is a small storefront that is walk up only with an order window. They have 2 tables in front you can sit at but most people get takeout.
Who Goes Here?
A wide variety of people dine at proper pie from couples, friends, and families to individuals on lunch break.
Overall Atmosphere
Though the storefront is attractively branded, friendly, and clean it is essentially takeout only. You can look in the windows and see the kitchen and the pies. The two tables they have are both outside and there is no indoor seating or restrooms available. It is exclusively a walk-up order window. The weather was nice during my visit but I could see it being rough to get food on a rainy or cold day.
Location
Proper Pie Co. in Richmond, VA is near downtown, so it is street parking only. There are not parking lots available. It is walkable from wherever you do park, but it is a mostly residential area with limited other shops walking distance away.

Value for money
I think Proper Pie Co. is a good value for your money. They are highly specialized and make very fresh, delicious, high-quality pies. It is a bit pricy by the slice but the serving sizes are quite good. So, I think you would be satisfied with one savor pie and one sweet, which would be a comparable price to getting lunch anywhere these days.
Overall
Overall, Proper Pie Co. is a very tasty pie shop in Richmond, VA. I enjoyed everything I tried , but the Lemon Almond Cream Pie was my personal favorite. I think it would be fun to try more of their selection of pies. I do think that because the parking is difficult and it is walk up, take-out only with very limited hours this shop would only be good to visit on special occasions unless you lived in the surrounding neighborhood. All in all, Proper Pie Co. was a fun and unique place to visit and I would recommend checking it out if you are in Richmond, VA.
